The Climate Change Commission joined the Philippine Renewable Energy Leaders Reception and highlighted the role of energy diversification in strengthening energy security and advancing a just transition.
 

MANILA, Philippines – The Climate Change Commission (CCC) underscored the importance of diversifying energy sources as a key strategy to strengthen the Philippines’ energy security and support a just transition during the Philippine Renewable Energy Leaders Reception.

Discussions highlighted the critical role of energy diversification, including the expansion of renewable energy sources such as wind, in addressing rising electricity demand, exposure to fuel price volatility, and increasing climate risks, while strengthening long-term energy security.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the country’s renewable energy supply largely comes from geothermal at 9.1% and hydropower at 8.7%, while solar and wind continue to expand as part of efforts to broaden the energy mix. 

CCC Vice Chairperson and Executive Director Robert E.A. Borje emphasized that renewable energy plays a crucial role in diversifying the country’s power mix and reducing systemic vulnerabilities across the energy sector.

“If pursued well, renewable energy can contribute to a system that delivers security, affordability, and resilience together. Not simply by diversifying the power mix, but by helping reduce vulnerabilities, strengthen investor confidence, improve long-term competitiveness, and support a more resilient pattern of economic growth,” Borje said.

He further noted that diversifying the country’s energy mix through renewable and indigenous sources supports the country’s climate goals, including the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), while reducing dependence on imported fuels and enhancing energy security.

The urgency of this shift is underscored by the country’s continued reliance on imported energy. Data from the IEA shows that the Philippines heavily depends on foreign sources for its fossil fuel needs, importing 67.5% of its total coal supply and 95% of its total crude oil supply.

At the same time, Borje underscored that the transition must be pursued with care, ensuring that communities benefit and that the process remains just, particularly for those whose livelihoods may be affected.

He added that building an energy system that is sustainable, renewable, affordable, resilient, and capable of withstanding future shocks may become one of the defining development imperatives of this generation.

The Philippine Renewable Energy Leaders Reception convened government leaders, industry stakeholders, investors, development partners, and members of the broader energy community to strengthen coordination, promote knowledge exchange, and advance energy diversification toward a more secure, resilient, and sustainable energy future for the Philippines.
