There is a compelling need for national government agencies (NGAs) to converge strategies and complement efforts to effectively address risks at the local level. President Rodrigo R. Duterte, in his 2017 State of the Nation Address, called for NGAs to act swiftly and work hand in hand with local government units, local communities, and the private sector in undertaking disaster resiliency measures. Quoting the president:
“I am directing the Cabinet Cluster on Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management to immediately work hand in hand with the concerned LGUs, the private sector and the affected communities themselves, in undertaking disaster resiliency measures, antidotes.”
To strengthen this resolve, the Climate Change Commission in solidarity with the Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation-Disaster Risk Reduction (CCAM-DRR) Cabinet Cluster has organized the First National Convention on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction.
The First National Convention on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction was held at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila. It aims to promote a common understanding among the LGU on CCAM-DRR concepts; raise awareness about the best practices on building climate resilience and preparing for the “Big Ones”; and identify prevailing CCAM-DRR issues and recommend actions with specific deliverables.
